Re: A Code of Conduct for Tourism in the Holy Land

Dear Holy Father,

Prayerful greetings.

It gives us Palestinians great happiness that you have decided to be in our midst. We especially note your repeated calls and hope for justice in Palestine. Your visit provides us with much comfort and courage as we still struggle for peace and reconciliation in our homeland, the birthplace of Jesus.

One of the ways in which pilgrims people and others in the world can join hands with us is by undertaking travel to the Holy Land in the right spirit and with the right preparation. This will enable them to better understand the history of an ancient land as well its contemporary situation, to appreciate the culture and values of a people who have been here for more than two thousand years. Visitors so enriched will return home well equipped to share their experience of the reality in Palestine with their Church and other communities, and with their authorities and agencies of influence.

Towards such an outcome, we in Palestine have developed a Code of Conduct for Tourism in the Holy Land. The Palestinian Initiative for Responsible Tourism which includes the Palestinian Ministry of Tourism, several Church groups and organizations, including the Catholic Bethlehem University, have put much effort into producing this Code. Our work has also been supported by Churches and many organizations around the world.

Holy Father, I write to seek your blessing and endorsement of the Code.

I am enclosing a copy of the Code. Your approbation will mean much to the people of Palestine who welcome pilgrims with open arms if given the full opportunity.

In anticipation of an encouraging response from you, I remain

Yours sincerely,

On behalf of the Palestinian Initiative for Responsible Tourism,

Rami Kassis

Director of the Alternative Tourism Group
